Paper Wall Flowers

Hi everyone! I’m Hallie, Natalie’s daughter for those of you who don’t know, and I’m so excited to be writing another blog post, about the wall flowers we made! I love how they turned out and had so much fun making them, and I hope this blog post will inspire you to make some of your own!

 

We started out by cutting large petals out of white card stock paper. We forgot to check the pound of cardstock that we used, but it was thicker than printer paper, but not so thick that it wasn’t flexible at all, and it worked really well for our white flowers. The cream-colored paper was also card stock, but a little thicker and not so flexible. It worked, but I would recommend getting paper that isn’t super thick, to make the process of making your flowers easier.

I cut out the petals so that they had a little flap on the side (as seen below), which made gluing them together much easier. I would draw out one petal to my liking and cut it out. I then used that petal to trace the rest for that first layer. Each flower that I made had three layers and a center. For the flowers that had six petals, I would trace out six more, and for the flowers with four petals, I would trace out four more. This means that there would be one extra to use for my next layer, because I would trace a smaller flower inside of the one from the first layer (about one inch in) and then cut that one out and use it for tracing the second layer. That made the second layer similar to the first, only smaller. Then I would repeat the same process of cutting them out to make the next layer. I erased the tracing lines off of the petals once I had cut them out.

 

 

The wider the petals, the fewer there will be. For a couple of the flowers I only had four petals in one layer, and six petals per layer for another flower. I didn’t really plan on how many petals would be in each layer,  but just made petals, overlaid them, and then glued them together using the flaps. We used a hot glue gun, which held the petals together really well.

 

 

Once I had one petal left in a layer, I had to pull it over a little further to glue it to the petal adjacent to it, and this gave the layers a three-dimensional shape.  I didn’t originally anticipate this giving it the three dimensional look, but it seemed to work out that way and I loved it!

For some of the other flowers that my sister and mom made, they were not three dimensional. They did not use the “flap cut ” on the edge and kind of stacked their petals and curled the edges to make them pop out. They looked really good like this too. It was really neat to see them all ending up so different from each other.

 

 

After I had three layers, I put some glue in the center of the first layer, and glued the second one on top of it. I then glued the third onto the second layer in the same way.

 

 

 

 

For the center of my flowers, I used the leftover petal from the third layer and traced a smaller petal inside it. I cut it out, but this time I only made 2 more petals. I then had three petals to make a center. I cut a small line at the tip of each petal, as if I was going to cut it in half. I then glued those two parts (where the cut was) together for that one petal. I did that for the other two petals and then glued them all together. I was then left with a small center to glue onto the flower!

 

Another thing that I played around with was folding the petals to create a line that looked like it split them in half, and rolling them to make them curve up and down. It’s really fun to try different things with these flowers and use different petal shapes and techniques. The best tip I could give you is to just be creative with them! The point is to get the flowers to look different and unique, and give them dimension. There’s so many ways to do so, so go crazy and have some fun making some flowers of your own!!
